Exhibition Workshops

It is with much regret that the Trustees of The Church Stretton and South Shropshire Arts Festival have decided to cancel the 2020 Festival, in view of the current pandemic. After 53 continuous years, this is not only a huge disappointment for the Trustees and the Festival Committee, but also for all our volunteers, our audiences, our exhibitors and for the community as well.

We were planning to host these workshops in 2020:

Willow Craft

Friday 31st July

Led by Sophie Francis

Sophie is offering two different workshops, details below; the cost is £35 per workshop.

Sophie Francis lives and works in rural Shropshire creating traditional and contemporary willow products inspired by organic forms and the colours, textures and patterns within nature. As well as leading workshops Sophie welcomes private commissions for bespoke willow and mixed media items. Each workshop is aimed at producing a different design:

Willow Bird Feeder Workshop – 10am-1pm

Make a beautiful and useful bird feeder to hold fat balls for small garden birds. Students will learn at least two willow basketry techniques whilst creating this item on a frame, which will provide the basic knowledge to try more experimentation with this wonderful material in the future. A choice of willow will be available which will offer different colours in the weave.
A small hand-made cork handle will be provided for attaching to the bird feeder.

Willow Flower Workshop – 2pm-5pm

Make a stunning flower for the home or garden. On this workshop students will use the same technique as a traditional English basket base, providing an excellent introduction to basketry.
Attendees will be able to choose from a range of willow colours for the flowers and also take away a long willow stick for use as a stem.

Refreshments will be provided. Attendees will be advised nearer the time as to what essentials they may need to bring. Please allow time to browse the exhibition, to which you will have complimentary entry.

Copper Foiled Glass

Thursday 6th August

Led by Jennifer Brewer

Jennifer is offering two identical workshops, 9.30am-12.30pm and 2pm-5pm; the cost is £35 per workshop.

Jennifer Brewer is a Glass Artist living near Ludlow. She not only teaches students how to create exquisite items using both leaded and glass fusing techniques, but also undertakes unique commissions and restoration work on old stained glass windows.

Attendees will have the opportunity to create a beautiful strand of copper foiled glass bunting. They will be taught how to safely handle and cut their chosen pieces of coloured glass, grind down the edges and then foil them using copper tape. The final stage will be to solder them to form 5 triangles that will be tied together with twine or co-ordinating ribbon to complete the process of creating their own personalised piece of artwork. The bunting can be taken home at the end of the session.

Refreshments will be provided. Attendees will be advised nearer the time as to what essentials they may need to bring. Please allow time to browse the exhibition, to which you will have complimentary entry.
