Lizzi Tocknell is a freelance horn player and teacher based in London. She has appeared with orchestras including the Royal Opera House Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra, and she is the Principal Horn of Bampton Classical Opera. She recently completed a Masters studying under Richard Bissill at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where she was a Girdlers Company Scholar, having previously been an ABRSM scholar at the Royal College of Music, where she learned with Simon Rayner. In 2014 Lizzi spent four months on exchange to the class of Radovan Vlatkovic at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. Whilst studying, Lizzi appeared as principal with several prestigious youth orchestras including the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Youth, Britten-Pears Orchestra and Barbican Young Orchestra and she also participated in the LSO Brass Academy 2016.
As a soloist, Lizzi has appeared with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, in a performance that was broadcast on BBC Radio Wales, as well as the Hertfordshire Philharmonia, the Shropshire Chamber Orchestra and the Bloomsbury Chamber Orchestra, in the premiere of a new Horn Concerto by Shropshire based Mike Turner. She was also one of the brass finalists in the BBC Young Musician of the Year 2012 competition. She studied with Simon de Souza at Wells Cathedral School, where she held a Department for Education Specialist Music Award, and with Peter Merry at Trinity College of Music Junior Department.
Lizzi’s recital will illustrate the development of the horn and its repertoire.
