A young, multi-talented and versatile company, ZULU Tradition present a powerful stage show combining song and dance with drums. Imagine a youthful, mixed gender, Ladysmith Black Mambazo with high kicks; this company of young Zulu singers and dancers from KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, are now based in the West Midlands. They deliver a heady mix of raw African harmonies with rhythmic percussion, vibrant dance and soul-stirring harmony singing, in traditional costume. They are great communicators, their stage shows are exciting and hugely entertaining, attracting enthusiastic audiences. They have performed at festivals, indoor and outdoor events, theatres and arts centres, concerts, weddings and private functions and also offer a range of educational workshops for schools and colleges, happily working with adults, children or family groups, outdoors or indoors.
ZULU Tradition have performed at venues and events including Buckingham Palace for (then) Prince Charles, the British Museum for Mandela Day, The South African High Commission for the British Red Cross, and a huge number of local arts and folk festivals throughout the country.
ZULU Tradition is also an educational performance company, using song, dance and drama and grounded firmly in the curriculum of Africa’s rich history and the established paradigms of Zulu philosophy. It’s a ‘fairtrade’ company run by Zulus for Zulus.
A typical show from ZULU encompasses:
Maskandi (indigenous Zulu music); traditional song & dance compilations comprising Zulu psalms (AMAHUBO); traditional songs (AMACULO ESINTU); and various genres of traditional dance (i.e. IINGOMA, UMZANSI, ISIGENYANE, NENDLAMU) plus visual arts – costume and beadwork. They place great value on the oral relaying of information from the older generation to the youngest (UKUTHAMUNDWA).
As well as this evening performance, the group are also offering a Dance Workshop during the afternoon. This is aimed at ages 5+ to adults, will last 90 minutes and starts at 3pm.
